Five things YOU can do to make your home green!

  1. Put lots of houseplants in your home. Plants naturally keep our indoor air clean and healthy. They have been proven to absorb dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene. Here is a list of common houseplants that will clean your air.

  2. Open up the curtains and blinds in the morning to let in natural light. You won't have to turn on so many lights and you'll feel better with the sunshine coming in!

  3. If you are painting the inside of your home, ask your parents to use Non VOC paint. This paint is safer to use than other house paints. It's better for your health and the environment! Here's information on different types of "green" paint.

  4. Try to keep vinyl (PVC) out of your house. Instead of a vinyl shower curtain, use a cloth one instead. Ask your parents to buy furniture with cloth fabric instead of vinyl ("fake leather") fabric. Watch this fun cartoon about PVC!

  5. Use less water. Take shorter showers and turn off the faucet when brushing your teeth or doing the dishes. Ask your parents to install low-flow showerheads and faucets. Saving water saves energy. Every drop counts!
