Five Things YOU can do to Keep our Planet Healthy!

  1. Recycle batteries at Walgreens drug store. Batteries contain a lot of poison. Recycling them prevents this poison from leaking into our water and land. All Walgreen stores in San Francisco will take recycled batteries. Use the EcoFinder for other locations in San Francisco.

  2. Ask your parents to use chlorine-free bleach at home and to use less-toxic cleaning sprays and other household products. Many of these items can be purchased at stores or online:

  3. Teach your parents not to dump poisons down the drain like used motor oil, paint-thinner or pesticides. Have them take these dangerous or hazardous materials to the Hazardous Waste Facility.

  4. Ask your parents to find safer ways to control pests in the home and garden so that they don't use pesticides. This safer pest control is called Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and can control pests without poison.

  5. Get your parents to exchange your old mercury thermometer for a free digital one! The City of San Francisco is offering free thermometers at three different locations: SF Environment – 11 Grove St. @ Hyde St., UCSF Bookstore – 500 Parnassus Ave. @ Hillway & 3rd Ave., and SF Household Hazardous Waste Facility – 501 Tunnel Ave. @ Recycle Rd.
