What is a Pest?

Our environment is filled with many different living things or organisms. Although every life form has a role to play in nature, some plants, animals and insects live in places that get in our way or interfere with our schools, health and home.

When these organisms are found out of place, they are considered pests. For example, when ants live outdoors, they loosen up the soil so plants can have oxygen and grow. This is a very important function of the ant. When ants move into our kitchens or on our picnic tables however, they are out of place and become pests.
